Dental veneers are thin shells that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth to improve their appearance.
In which cases are veneers recommended, and can they be placed if you have missing teeth?
What Are Veneers Used For?
Dental veneers can be used to create a perfect smile.

They can conceal the following imperfections:
- chipped teeth;
- cracked teeth;
- discolored teeth that cannot be whitened;
- crooked teeth;
- large gaps between teeth.
Dental veneers were first introduced in the 1930s by Dr. Charles Pincus to conceal dental imperfections in Hollywood movie stars. Using a dental powder that was originally intended for denture fabrication, he temporarily attached porcelain shells to the teeth, which later became known as veneers. They were placed only for the duration of filming, did not adhere very securely, and were more of a cosmetic prop than a true dental treatment.
Nevertheless, it was thanks to Dr. Pincus that the term “Hollywood smile” became widely known, and the doctor himself became known as the “dentist to the stars.” His patients included such famous actors as Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, Shirley Temple, Fred Astaire, and many others.
Over time, veneers became popular far beyond Hollywood because of their ability to create the desired “Hollywood smile.”
Today, most veneers are permanent restorations bonded to the front surface of the teeth.
Modern dental veneers are most commonly made of porcelain. Before placing them, the dentist must carefully prepare the tooth surfaces. This primarily involves minimal enamel preparation. At Yarema Dental, this preparation is performed under magnification, making the procedure minimally invasive. The clinic also uses preparation guides that allow this process to be carefully controlled.
Veneers are custom-made after impressions of the patient’s teeth have been taken.
Several types of porcelain are used for manufacturing porcelain veneers, each with its own characteristics and advantages.
A qualified dentist should select the most appropriate material for the veneers based on the patient’s individual needs and clinical situation.
Once the veneers have been fabricated, they are bonded to the teeth using dental cement.
Can Veneers Replace Missing Teeth?
If a person has missing teeth, veneers are not the right solution. Each veneer is bonded to an existing tooth to create a natural-looking smile. In order to place a veneer, the patient must have sufficient natural tooth structure. The tooth must be large enough to support the veneer and must not be broken or severely decayed.
If a tooth is too small to support a veneer, the dentist may recommend placing a dental crown to protect the tooth and improve its appearance.
The solution for missing teeth is not veneers but dental implants. Artificial tooth replacements also allow you to eat normally, including all of your favorite foods, which is generally not possible with removable dentures.
Durability, stability, and improved aesthetics are among the key advantages of dental implants. Dental implants look, feel, and function like natural teeth and are effective for everyday chewing and speaking. Most importantly, with proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime.
If you want to achieve a Hollywood smile but are missing one of your front teeth, you have three options.
The first option is to place veneers on your existing teeth and separately place a dental implant to replace the missing tooth. A ceramic crown must also be placed on the implant.
The implant-supported crown can be fabricated to match both the shape and the shade of the surrounding natural teeth.
The second option is to remove the remaining natural teeth and replace them with dental implants. This may be appropriate for patients whose front teeth are severely damaged, broken, infected, or cracked below the gum line and cannot be restored.
If you are missing one tooth and the surrounding teeth also have an unsatisfactory appearance, a dental bridge may be considered to restore the missing tooth and close the gap.
Dental bridges are suitable for severely worn teeth that still have healthy roots and can provide the same aesthetic result as veneers.
Why Is It Important to Replace Missing Teeth?
Many people postpone or even refuse to replace a missing tooth, especially if it is located in an area that is not easily visible.
Unfortunately, a missing tooth can negatively affect your overall oral health. When one tooth is missing, the neighboring teeth begin to shift and may become misaligned or crowded. The risk of developing gum disease also increases. When back teeth are missing, the front teeth are subjected to greater chewing forces, which causes them to wear down more quickly.
Over time, a missing tooth may lead to bone loss, gum disease, and eventually the loss of additional teeth.
What Other Options Are Available to Improve the Appearance of Your Teeth?
If your teeth have become discolored, Yarema Dental can offer you various options to achieve a whiter smile. These include different teeth whitening procedures, professional dental cleaning, and other cosmetic treatments.
If your teeth are slightly crooked or crowded, they can be straightened with clear aligners.
